ispeak Global by Adrian Fisk

Avril Lui, 22. Post-grad student. Guangxi Province.In 2008, UK-based photographer Adrian Fisk began a project originally entitled iSpeak with the intention to understand where our world was headed through the thoughts of today’s youths. Initially focusing on China, Fisk interrogated 16 to 30-year-olds on the streets, asking them what was on their minds. The young people were instructed to write down what they wanted to say and hold it up for a photo. Along the way, he ran into several people who were illiterate but included them in the series by photographing them holding a blank white board and captioning their statement. Fisk’s project gives a voice, not only to young people, but also to the lesser heard illiterate youths that don’t have as many methods of being heard.

Over the course of this social adventure, Fisk discovered that, essentially, everyone wants a good life. He says that the essence of the project is “understanding who we are and that we’re not so different.” The project has since expanded to India and is supported by the United Nations Population Fund, changing its name to iSpeak Global. It hopes to reach 25 countries and is currently raising funds in London.

Back to the future by Irina Werning

[ I love old photos. I admit being a nosey photographer. As soon as I step into someone else’s house, I start sniffing for them. Most of us are fascinated by their retro look but to me, it’s imagining how people would feel and look like if they were to reenact them today... A few months ago, I decided to actually do this. So, with my camera, I started inviting people to go back to their future.

by the way, this project made me realise Im a bit obsessive...]

My thoughts My photo- Capture

2009 5 31 。Okinawa Japan

Snap shorts during driving is fun, time is the essence, you ought to act quick.
You only have a split of a second to capture that very moment, if you miss it, you miss it.
You do not know when the clouds would move and unblock the sun;
A child’s smile or sob is out of your control
You can buy a new ice cream for shooting if it’s fallen to the ground but you can’t re create carelessness

People, events, objects, there’s no turning back if you’ve miss it
Capturing an image is pleasure;
Remembering the moment is precious;
Being in love is an enjoyment;
Being together takes wisdom.

Have you hold onto whatever’s important to you?

Edward Horsford’s water balloon bursts

London based photographer Edward Horsford photographs balloons in a very unique way. He freezes them as the leave his hands to explode.
The pictures are taken with a “high tech” DIYed sound trigger, Strobes, and one rusty stick.

Edward: You quickly discover that SLR shutters are far to variable and slow to be triggered for high speed shots.
Thus you have to trigger the lighting and have flashes that can be bright enough yet also have the smallest duration.
The SB600 at 1/64 is *just* ok for this but the SB800 at 1/128 is much better.
People doing even more high speed stuff like bullets will have custom-made flashes.

I’m using a custom made trigger that I designed myself.
I spent much time researching the available triggers and found none that offered anything more than something I could build myself.
It was a good challenge to build and means that I can be far more adaptable with features and functionality down the line.
I found the CameraAXE a great inspiration, both for features and example code.
It wasn’t for sale when I built my trigger, but we have similar feature sets (I wanted mine to be more adaptable and smaller). I built it over several months last autumn.

Edward: My camera is really the least important part of the shots, setting a timer on my camera to take a long exposure of 1 to 2 seconds
and if the flash fires within that time,  I get an image.
